Lab Study C: Rhizarians – Examples: Foraminiferans and Radiolarians Foraminiferans: 1. In the space below, sketch several different forams. 2. Refer to table 13.5 on pages 363-364 and list the characteristics, ecological roles, and economic importance of forams. Radiolarians: 1. In the space below, sketch several different radiolarians. 2.
radiolarians in the Phanerozoic is conducted based on the informational system "RADBASE" containing the information on 1721 genera of radiolarians and their synonyms. Problems of the biology, ecology, and taphonomy of radiolarians are discussed. It is shown that the biomass of polycystine radiolarians is greatest at depths of 50--400 m.
Many species of Radiolaria inhabit masses of ocean water, and occupy faunal niches or biographical zones comparable with other zooplankton. Radiolarian species are non-motile; they drift along water currents while those currents compartmentalize the ocean into finer ecological domains. Polycystine radiolarians (a siliceous microfossil group) are useful for reconstructing paleoceanographic changes in this region during the Quaternary because of their ecological properties in these types of deep-sea sediments. The classification system of chaetognaths has been updated, and the intra-species diversity is also being studied.

Considering their habitats, radiolarians represent a promising tool to explore the mesopelagic environ-ment in the geological past. Processes taking place in this environment play a significant role in the sequestration of organic carbon, and thus for global climate development. Such exploration requires ARTICLE IN PRESS
Colonial radiolarians are also hosts to symbiotic dinoflagellates.

Radiolarians are siliceous protists, which live throughout the ocean water column critical role in the oceans, radiolarians' Neogene and Quaternary biodiversity, to assess the ecological impacts of differential regional climat
They provide nutrition for such organisms as salps. As such, they are part of the food chain in their respective habitats. The Radiolaria, also called Radiozoa, are protozoa of diameter 0.1–0.2 mm that produce intricate mineral skeletons, typically with a central capsule dividing the cell into the inner and outer portions of endoplasm and ectoplasm. The elaborate mineral skeleton is usually made of silica.
